Purpose of Project

The purpose of the project is to increase access to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area by offering National Park visitors a new, attractive, non-polluting mass transit connection to the regional transit while respecting the settings, context, and resources of these two National Parks and avoiding adverse effects to their status as National Historic Landmark Districts.

Project Objectives

  • To increase access to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park and Golden Gate National Recreation Area by offering park visitors an attractive, non-polluting mass transit alternative.
  • To create and/or enhance transit connections between the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park and Golden Gate National Recreation Area and low income and transit-dependent populations.
  • To connect the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park and Golden Gate National Recreation Area with a new cohesive recreation and cultural corridor along the northern waterfront.
  • To avoid or minimize adverse impacts on the National Historic Landmark District and related cultural and historic resources.
  • To avoid or minimize adverse impacts on the natural, scenic and recreational values of the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park and Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
  • To minimize adverse impacts of noise and vibration in the project area resulting from the mass transit alternative.
  • To improve or to minimize adverse impacts on air quality at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and along San Francisco’s northern waterfront.
  • To provide safe and efficient rail transit for all users of the service.
  • To increase public transit connectivity via the northern waterfront corridor.

The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will examine the environmental impacts of the proposed historic streetcar extension to the residents and businesses along proposed routes and to the natural, cultural, and recreational resources in the study area.

The EIS will examine the impacts of the three alignment alternatives from the 2004 Feasibility Study as well as additional alignments suggested by the public during the scoping period or developed by project staff. The three alignment options from the Feasibility Study are shown below:
Option 1
Option 2
Option 3
The EIS will examine the impacts of the two terminal turnaround options at Fort Mason from the 2004 Feasibility Study as well as additional ones suggested by the public during the scoping period or developed by project staff.
